Scotland Forever: Portrait of a Nation

---------- A Collection of Poetry ---------

In Scotland Forever: Portrait of a Nation Martin Campbell Kaney tells the story of how the invincible and never conquered Scots were the “invisible hand” which made Britain and its Empire, and of how and why Scotland and the Scots have been at the forefront of every aspect of human thought and invention in modern times, from David Hume to Adam Smith, James Watt to James Clerk Maxwell, and Alexander Graham Bell to John Logie Baird.

These are the poems of William Wilson Scott, a young Slamannan farmer, written in the 1890s. Scotland has a long tradition of rural poetry, song and rhyming, going all the way back and beyond to Thomas of Ercildoune, Thomas the Rhymer, but finding its best known expression in the works of Robert Burns and James Hogg, but also including the traditional Border Ballads and the Bothy Ballads of the North East.

As he faces his final year at University young Michael Xanthes walks the streets of Edinburgh in search of the perfect moment of knowledge, the perfect moment of understanding and the perfect moment of truth. Martin Campbell Kaney takes us back to student days in the Edinburgh of the 1970s, a very different world to that of today it seems, but for the young the problems are always the same.
