Scotland Forever by Martin Campbell Kaney is a vivid and deeply researched exploration of Scotland’s history, identity, and enduring influence. Spanning ancient origins to the modern era, the book traces how Scotland was formed through conflict, culture, intellect, and resilience, and how its people shaped not only their own nation but the wider world.
Blending narrative history with cultural and political insight, Kaney brings to life the figures, movements, and ideas that defined Scotland’s journey. From the early kingdoms and resistance to Anglo-French invasions to the Enlightenment, Empire, and contemporary debates about nationhood, the book presents Scotland not as a peripheral story, but as a driving force in British and global history. Written with clarity and conviction, Scotland Forever challenges traditional interpretations of the past and offers a confident account of Scotland as a nation of thinkers, innovators, and actors on the world stage.

Martin Campbell Kaney studied Scottish History at Edinburgh University and Scottish Folklore and Culture in the School of Scottish Studies in the 1970s (and later Scots Law at Strathclyde University). He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and lives in Edinburgh. He is the author of several works on indirect tax and a novel, Xanthes, about student days at Edinburgh University in the 1970s.
